What Is AEGIS Accreditation?
AEGIS is the only independent UK body dedicated specifically to inspecting and accrediting educational guardianship organisations.
AEGIS — the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students — was founded in 1994 and is a registered charity. It independently inspects guardianship providers against standards covering safeguarding, student welfare, host family vetting, emergency response and ongoing monitoring.

Is AEGIS Accreditation Legally Required?
There is currently no statutory licence or compulsory registration required to provide educational guardian services in the UK. AEGIS accreditation is voluntary, but it is the recognised benchmark that most independent schools and families expect.
Worth knowing — the visa rule is a separate thing: Since 29 May 2025, under Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules HC 733, every Child Student visa applicant must have a nominated guardian aged 18 or over who is a British citizen or settled in the UK, and that guardian must provide a signed Letter of Undertaking. From 11 November 2025, that Letter of Undertaking must also include the name, date of birth, address and (where held) National Insurance number of any adult regularly living with the nominated guardian.
- This is a Home Office visa requirement, not an AEGIS requirement.
- A guardianship organisation can act as the nominated guardian, naming a qualifying UK-based staff contact.
- A guardian can meet this visa rule without holding AEGIS accreditation at all — AEGIS accreditation is what proves that guardian has been independently inspected and meets recognised standards, not just that one exists.

Why Do Schools Require AEGIS Accreditation?
Because the Department for Education’s National Minimum Standards for boarding schools hold schools directly responsible for their students’ guardianship arrangements.
The National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools, in force since 5 September 2022, introduced Standard 22 — Educational Guardians as its own dedicated standard for the first time. It makes the school responsible for satisfying itself that a student’s guardianship arrangements genuinely promote their welfare, and AEGIS is the recognised body schools are pointed toward when making that judgement.
That’s why, in practice, most independent boarding schools now expect, and some formally require a guardian to hold AEGIS accreditation, typically at Gold Standard specifically.

Why this matters in practice: some UK boarding schools don’t just recommend AEGIS accreditation — they require it, specifically at Gold Standard level. Published school guardian policies commonly state that guardians must move from Preliminary to Gold Standard within a set period, or risk no longer being accepted as an approved guardian for that school.
A Preliminary-only guardian could become a real problem partway through your child’s time there. YES Guardians already holds Gold Standard — so this is never a risk you need to plan around.

What Happens During an AEGIS Gold Inspection?
- Application & documentation review — policies, procedures and evidence against all 11 Quality Standards are submitted for review.
- Questionnaires go out to parents, students, partner schools and host families — not just to the guardianship organisation itself.
- Homestay visits an AEGIS inspector visits host family homes in person as part of the 360° review.
- Extended lead-inspector meeting with the organisation's directors and Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Inspection report issued a detailed written report against each of the 11 Standards, including direct quotes gathered from students, parents, schools and host families.
- Gold Standard awarded valid for four years, with annual declaration forms and the possibility of random spot checks in between.

How Do I Verify a Guardian's AEGIS Accreditation?
A logo on a website isn’t proof. Here’s how to actually check:
Check the live member list on aegisuk.net directly rather than trusting a badge shown on the guardian’s own site — logos can be left up after accreditation lapses.
Confirm which tier — Preliminary or Gold Standard — since the two are commonly (and incorrectly) both referred to as “AEGIS accredited.”
Ask for a copy of the latest inspection report. An accredited organisation should be able to share it, or at least summarise its key findings, without hesitation.
Check the accreditation date and validity window — Gold Standard runs for four years, Preliminary for two, so ask when re-inspection is next due.
GETTING IT RIGHT
Common Myths About AEGIS Accreditation
There is no statutory licence for guardianship providers in the UK. AEGIS accreditation is voluntary — it’s an industry benchmark, not a legal one.
The two tiers are correctly named Preliminary and Gold Standard. There is no separate “Standard” tier.
The Child Student visa’s nominated-guardian and Letter of Undertaking requirement is a Home Office rule, entirely separate from AEGIS accreditation. A guardian can satisfy the visa rule without being AEGIS accredited at all. However most schools will not accept this. It is not worth the risk.
With no statutory licensing regime, an unaccredited guardian faces no independent inspection at all. AEGIS accreditation — and specifically Gold Standard — is currently the only meaningful independent check that exists.

No. They’re different organisations, assessing different things — YES Guardians has chosen to pursue AEGIS Gold Standard specifically, the more rigorous, guardianship-focused of the two.
