What is educational guardianship?
An educational guardian is a named, UK-based person or organisation who acts on behalf of overseas parents while their child studies in the UK. They are responsible for your child’s welfare, their accommodation during school holidays and exeats, and all communication with their school when you cannot be there yourself.
Educational guardianship is not the same as legal guardianship. A legal guardian has full parental responsibility in law. An educational guardian is your trusted UK representative — present, informed, and acting always in your child’s best interests.
Most UK boarding schools require international students to have a named educational guardian before they can enrol. This requirement exists because schools need a responsible UK-based adult they can contact in an emergency, and because UKVI regulations require a named guardian for students on a student visa. Without one, your child’s place at school cannot be confirmed.

Is a guardian a legal requirement for UK boarding schools?
There is no UK law that specifically requires international students at boarding schools to have an educational guardian. However, in practice, the requirement is universal.
Every reputable UK independent boarding school will have educational guardianship written into their admissions policy as mandatory for international students. It is a condition of enrolment, not a suggestion.
For students on a UK student visa, a named guardian is also required to support your child’s CAS number and visa application.

Holiday & Exeat Cover
Exeats, half terms, and school holidays are planned ahead — not scrambled for at the last minute. Your child, and school always knows exactly where they are going, who will collect them, and who will be there. No uncertainty, no anxiety.
Transport Coordination
Airport transfers, end-of-term travel, and emergency transport are arranged and confirmed in advance — coordinated with your child’s school timetable so nothing falls through the gap between school closing and a flight home.
Acting in Loco Parentis
When your child needs medical consent, a parent at a school meeting, or someone to make a decision that cannot wait — you need two things: someone with genuine parental instinct, and someone with clinical authority. Every host family we work with has been personally vetted by Hayley and Marc. That process goes well beyond the AEGIS minimum requirements. It includes a home visit, DBS checks, reference checks, and a conversation about how they would handle the specific needs of an international student far from home.
Our standard is not a checklist. It is a question we ask ourselves about every family before we place a student with them: would we be comfortable leaving our own daughters there?
If the answer is anything other than yes, we do not use them.
Host families are matched to students individually by location, by personality, by dietary requirements, and by the student’s age and background. A good host family placement makes a measurable difference to how a child copes with being away from home. We have seen it enough times to know that when the match is right, students settle faster, perform better at school, and worry less. We take the matching seriously because the results are serious.

Everything you need to know before appointing a guardian for your child at a UK boarding school.
What is the difference between an educational guardian and a legal guardian?
A legal guardian has full parental responsibility in law. An educational guardian is your named UK representative while your child studies here. They act in loco parentis for day-to-day decisions, school communication, and welfare, but do not replace you as a parent in any legal sense. Most UK boarding schools require an educational guardian for all international students regardless of whether a legal guardian exists.
Do all UK boarding schools require a guardian?
Virtually every reputable UK independent boarding school requires international students to have a named educational guardian before they can enrol. It is written into admissions policy as a condition of the place, not a suggestion. For students on a UK student visa, a named guardian is also required to support the CAS application and visa documentation.
What happens to my child during school exeats and half terms?
Boarding schools close for exeat weekends, half terms, and holidays. During these periods your child needs somewhere safe and welcoming to go. At YES Guardians we arrange vetted host family placements for all exeats and holidays, matched individually to your child. Every host family is personally approved by Hayley and Marc before we place any student with them.
Can a family friend or UK relative act as educational guardian?
Yes, schools do permit this in principle. However there are significant practical requirements. The individual must be over 25, resident in the UK, available 24 hours a day, and able to reach the school within a reasonable time. They must also meet the school’s own safeguarding criteria under National Minimum Standards for Boarding Standard 22.3, which gives schools responsibility for checking the suitability of all guardian arrangements.
In practice, many families find that a friend or relative cannot reliably provide the host family network, 24/7 emergency cover, school liaison, and transport coordination that a professional guardian offers. If you are considering this route, speak to the school directly about their specific requirements before making any arrangements.
How much does educational guardianship cost in the UK?
Every family’s circumstances are different. The level of support a young child at a UK boarding school needs during exeats and holidays is very different to what a mature, independent sixth former requires.
